The Origins of Christmas

Christmas, as we know it today, is a holiday that has evolved over time. The early Christian church celebrated the Epiphany on January 6th, which commemorated the visit of the Magi to the baby Jesus. However, in the 4th century, Pope Julius I declared December 25th as the official date for Christmas, likely due to the existing Roman festival of Saturnalia, which took place around the same time.

This early celebration was heavily influenced by pre-Christian festivals and traditions, such as the Germanic Yule and the Roman festival of Sol Invictus. The early Christian church attempted to supplant these pagan practices with a distinctly Christian holiday, but it's clear that many of these influences have persisted over time.

The Evolution of Christmas Traditions
